How Long Does It Take to Complete a Painting?

The obvious answer is it has taken my entire life to complete the paintings you are viewing and those yet to be completed. Art (Drawing-Painting) has been a foundational expression and practice for my life since I was 18 months old. All that I have seen and experienced has shaped my artwork you see today.

As a general rule there are approximately 60 - 80 hours invested in each of my paintings. Oil painting also has a drying period between layers and an extended drying time before it can be varnished.

Why Do You Sign Your Art Obi?

Back in 2018, my oldest granddaughter was in the studio while I was putting the finishing touches on several paintings. As she reviewed each painting, she pointed her little finger and softly said, with tender conviction, “…and this one is mine.” The large 36” x 60”, oil on canvas painting was subsequently titled “Rosie’s Butterfly” in her honor. Once completed, I signed it Obi, which is what all 5 of my grandchildren call me. Obi is who I am in their eyes and the most meaningful existence I have been gifted. I attempt to honor that gift and present it in all of my creations.

Where Do You Get Your Ideas For Paintings?

Life. I love the natural world and I am always captivated by beautiful simple things. I love to paint birds, flowers and trees, so I am usually exploring authentic ways to represent my feelings and artistic voice.

I sketch concepts from nature, my intuitive perspective, and photo references. My intention is in creating a good foundational design and a dramatic representation of the subject matter. Once I have begun putting paint on the canvas, my goal is to allow the painting process to take control.

Do You Have Classes or Workshops for Painting Instruction?

Currently I do not have any scheduled classes as the majority of my time is allotted for creation. In the past I have conducted small sessions and art group workshop discussions. I enjoy the exploration and sharing these situations bring about. Connecting, learning and the teaching process with other artists is an important part of any creator’s development and artistic growth.
